EU Formulates Safety Standards For Infant Sleeping Products

European Union members voted on the mattress at the EU general product safety committee meeting in Brussels recently.

The European Commission issued a communique on the same day, pointing out that the safety standards adopted by the EU Member States will enhance the overall safety of infant sleeping products. For example, designing and producing mattresses based on the size of infant beds can prevent the mattress from being folded easily, avoiding the risk of being physically choked and suffocated. It is requested that infant sleeping bags, quilts and baby bumpers can not be provided with rope bands, rope rings, small detachable parts or sharp edges and corners, so that infants can be prevented from winding or other injuries.

In addition, the new standard requires that in the product instruction manual, the danger that the product may cause and the hygienic requirements of the product must be identified, and the product must also be able to withstand all necessary requirements.

Kuneva, a member of the European Union's Consumer Protection Committee, said that parents and infant caregivers should seriously consider ways to better ensure children's safety when talking about the safety standards for new baby sleeping products.

The new standards adopted by the EU member states at the EU General Products Safety Council meeting must also be approved by the European Parliament and the Council of Ministers of the European Union in the next three months.

The European Commission will formally promulgate relevant laws and regulations after the approval of the European Parliament and the Council of Ministers of the European Union.

According to the European Union statistics, between 2005 and 2007, newborn babies and children under 4 years of age had 17000 accidents due to safety problems of sleeping products.
