Poor sales of winter clothing, overseas clothing retailers cut prices

Sales of chain stores fell by 6.6%.

Recently, reporters learned from foreign media reports that this autumn is warmer than ever, leading to a decline in sales of coats and knitwear, and fashion retailers are now starting to reduce sales.

Marks &Spencer's coats and jackets are twenty percent off, while some other products discount up to sixty percent off, though it is trying to reduce discounts.

Debenhams lady's sweater is offered half price discount.

Dorothy Perkins, Burton, Bhs and Oasis offer thirty percent off promotions for these brand products, while many knitted goods of New Look and French Connection are sold at a discount of seven point five.

When many fashion chains are still waiting for the "black Friday" promotion, these discount activities have begun in the first two weeks of black five.

According to BDO's mid size chain store survey, clothing chain stores fell 6.6% in the first week of November compared with the same period last year.

That is more serious than the 3.6% decline in last year's weak trade.

BDO said that all the fashion retailers suffered losses because of the fact that fewer people were visiting the high streets and shopping centres.

Mild weather also resulted in a 0.6% decline in John Lewis fashion sales in the first week of November, especially for warmth.

Last week, John Lewis held a price promotion campaign at flesa department store, which was partly influenced by the excellent performance of the previous week.

"It seems that retailers are more efficient in handling inventory this year, but in order to get better data, they will no doubt hold promotions because black Friday is coming, smart consumers are looking for greater discount activities," said Sophie Michael, head of BDO's national retail department.

She said she hoped that promotions would be more selective rather than blind.

On Tuesday, Anders Kristiansen, President of New Look, said he did not think this year's warming would affect sales.

"Although the weather is very warm now, there is an early cold spell in September, which can change people's thinking and urge them to buy coats and sweaters."

This did not happen last year. After an untimely warm autumn, retailers had to clear their stocks through a big sale.

However, many other fashion executives said sales were unsatisfactory, especially compared with last year's clothing backlog data.

"The current discount rate is higher than that in the previous three years, but we expect that in the next 10-14 days, the promotion of high street will go further, unless the weather changes and the cold spell comes," said a retailer.

The cold wave is unlikely to happen, though the storm of Abigail will bring heavy rain and strong winds this weekend.

The British weather service forecasted the change in temperature every day. It said that in the next two weeks, the weather was humid and hot, with occasional showers.

The forecast said: "compared with the previous years, the temperature is generally high."

Tony Shiret, an analyst at Haitong Research Center, said sales fell in October and early November, making it harder for apparel retailers to empty their coats.
